Each of these books comes with a DVD included. I think this is a great idea because it's very difficult to follow qigong movements correctly from just reading a book. On the other hand, a DVD rarely has enough explanation and doesn't usually go through the history and principles of the practices. The DVDs are very clear and easy to follow.

 

Professor Zhang Guangde is the developer of Dao Yin Yang Sheng Gong which now forms part of the Chinese national health programme and is the most popular form of qigong practiced in China. These two books cover the four foundation sequences of Dao Yin Yang Sheng Gong, each book containing two of the sequences.  

 

I'm impressed with the dedication to detail in these two volumes and DVDs. The goal of this system is to prevent and treat illness. It was developed by Professor Zhang Guangde to treat his own life threatening illness and is soundly based on Chinese medicine principles.

 

The exercises involve gentle movement, systematic breathing and stimulation of key acupressure points. Dao Yin is an older name for qigong and Yang Sheng means “longevity health exercises”.

 

A distinguishing feature of this system is that it has specific practices for particular organs (as defined in Chinese medicine – not exactly the same as the Western medical meaning of organs). So, the practices you do can be tailored to your particular ailments if needed.

 

The four practices in these two volumes are the foundation for everything else but I must warn you that the full system is quite comprehensive comprising at least 29 different practices.

 

If you are interested in a proven health system, these two books make a great starting point. The level of detail will certainly teach you more about how qigong exercises are designed that most other books I’ve read.
