Qigong For Multiple Sclerosis: Finding Your Feet Again by Nigel Mills

Nigel Mills is an accredited Clinical Psychologist, Craniosacral Therapist and EMDR Therapist. He is also an experienced teacher of qigong. He currently works as an independent therapist in Abergavenny, South Wales, UK.

 

This should be a welcome addition to the qigong field for people suffering from multiple sclerosis. The first chapter of the book is an introduction to qigong and to why it might be helpful to MS

 

 

 

 

 

sufferers.

 

The book is based on a research study which was carried out in 1998 and 1999 and was supported and funded by the MS Research Trust. The participants in the study were recruited from local physiotherapists and general practitioners and all had been diagnosed with secondary progressive MS. Because of funding limitations it was only a small study. However, it had a control group and the results showed a significant improvement in the symptoms of the participants compared to the control group.

 

The research study is described in the second chapter. The third chapter introduces how Chinese Medicine understands  and approaches MS.  Chapters five and six describe the actual qigong exercises used in the program which is divided into seven stages:

1.  Cultivating safety (four exercises)

2.  Releasing tension - stretching, shaking and bouncing (three exercises)

3.  Encouraging alignment - the standing and sitting postures (two exercises)

4.  Self healing - creating inner space (two exercises)

5.  Developing a sense of balance (three exercises)

6.  Finding your feet again (one exercise)

7.  Meditation - gathering and centring (one exercise).

 

There is a morning and evening practice session.

 

The seventh chapter covers coping with stress. This is important because MS sufferers can often relapse after stressful events. The last chapter gives some advice on practice and on how to take it further.

 

I think this book is a great place to start for people with MS. The fact that the research study was very positive should give an MS sufferer confidence that these qigong methods are beneficial and well worth following. Because of the special needs of MS sufferers, having this program which is designed specifically for them, is a great boon. The exercises are simple and the instructions clear.

 

Once you’ve mastered and benefited from the material in this book, you can go on to study some of the more general qigong books and DVDs.
